Amazonian tribes threatened by London-based firm who want to drill for oil on their land [Peru]

At least two remote South American Indian tribes are threatened by a…company that wants to drill for oil on land where they have roamed for thousands of years, a court heard yesterday…The latest threat to Amerindians comes from Perenco, an oil exploration and development company based in London and Paris…Two other oil companies…Repsol, and Burlington Resources…are also involved in the court case…in Peru. It was brought by Peru’s Amazon Indian organization, AIDSEP. The group's lawsuit urges the judge to prohibit Perenco and other companies from working in the region and making contact with uncontacted tribes… The case is expected to continue for several months.
