FIFA statement on the BHRRC report on labour rights in the hospitality sector in Qatar – 14 July 2021

We have taken note of the report produced by the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRRC) and its conclusions on workers’ rights in the hotel sector in Qatar...

we are aware that a number of hotels in the region are in the process of reviewing and addressing gaps within their labour rights practices. We welcome the steps being taken by these businesses... We trust that the BHRRC report will help shed light on areas of needed improvement.

... we are currently reviewing the labour rights compliance of hotels and other service companies who will become directly involved in delivering the tournament. This process is based on the Workers’ Welfare Standards of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and follows the same audit and compliance systems that have been developed and implemented for workers on FIFA World Cup construction sites.

FIFA has also welcomed and been pleased to provide input to the initiative by the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs (ADLSA), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and the Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB) resulting in the development of a guidance tool on fair recruitment and employment for the hospitality sector in Qatar.
