JBS responded

JBS does not purchase cattle from farms involved in irregularities. The Company takes an unequivocal zero deforestation approach throughout its entire supply chain and was one of the first companies in the sector to invest in policies and new technologies…

JBS further clarifies that the information mentioned in the article about the transportation of livestock between farms/clients using its transport service does not reflect its operating standardsWith regard to indirect supplier traceability, we are in active discussion with the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture to explore a new procedure for the issue of GTAs / Animal Transit Permits to enable JBS and other beef processors to request and monitor that direct suppliers only buy calves and yearlings from farms that have a ‘GTA-Verde’ (Green – deforestation free - GTA) status.  JBS is also investing in three further projects to assess the most cost-effective and workable solution to address indirect supplier traceability issues. These include an innovative blockchain approach which will be piloted in a company-wide trial in the first instance.

With regard to cattle laundering, it was recently agreed with the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Brazil that a new ‘theoretical index’ of livestock productivity would enter into effect on July 1 2020 as a compulsory monitoring criterion for all processors that are signatories of TACs (Legal Agreement with Federal Prosecutors’ Office.) This index was initially developed by JBS in partnership with other stakeholders under its “Beef on Track programme...

The direct supplier monitoring system used by JBS is considered one of the world’s best and most sophisticated, analysing over 50,000 farms that supply cattle and a production area of 450,000 km²… Independent audits undertaken in the last six years show 99,9% compliance with the Company’s socioenvironmental criteria….We urge anyone with evidence of individual or farm-level malpractice to report it to the authorities so it can be appropriately addressed...
