Mandatory CR spending legislation is finally passed [India]

An Indian Bill that will force large companies to spend at least two per cent of their profits on corporate responsibility has...been approved by parliament...The Bill...will make India the first nation to set out mandatory spending levels on corporate responsibility. The terms of the legislation state that all businesses with a market capitalisation of more than...US$82 million...must spend at least two per cent of their profits on CR activities...The Bill also promotes gender equality on boards, states that at least one-third of listed company directors should be independent, and, for the first time, allows for the possibility of class action suits against Indian companies, which could be an important avenue of potential address for those claiming human rights or workplace standards abuses.
