Nepal: Dozens of hydropower workers believed alive after deadly flash floods

Nepalese authorities have expressed confidence that 46 workers are still alive in an underground chamber at the Rasuwagadhi hydropower plant, more than a week after deadly flash floods left them trapped. The floods, triggered by the collapse of a melting glacier on the Nepal-China border, have resulted in at least 1,252 confirmed deaths and over 4,200 people missing. Rescue efforts are focused on hydropower tunnels, where air pockets may have allowed workers to survive. Families of the trapped workers have criticized authorities for withholding information and not acting quickly enough. The disaster has affected 11 hydropower plants, reducing Nepal's electricity-generation capacity by about 10%.
