On 29 November, Nikita Baryshnikov, an environmental activist was charged with beating a guard of a private security company and sentenced to 300 hours of community service. Baryshnikov and other activists have been protesting against construction of a landfill designed for shipments of garbage from Moscow. The activists are worried the garbage shipments will include highly hazardous waste and food that will decompose without oxygen and will emit toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide and methane. The released gases will allegedly poison the atmosphere for many kilometers in all directions and toxic filtrates will enter the regions’ water supply.
