[Excerpt translation provided by Business and Human Rights Resource Centre]

"Apurímac: Las Bambas mining company denounced for COVID-19 infections in Challhuahuacho" - July 2, 2020

...In a statement, the social organizations of the district of Challhuahuacho, Cotabambas province in Apurimac blamed the recent infections of COVID-19 in the area on the Las Bambas mining company... In the same statement, they denounced that the five cases of virus infections in the district are due to the fact that Las Bambas mining company has exposed its workers because they travel in its crowded transportation, as well as sending the workers to be tested to discard infection at the local clinics... They also denounced that the government of Martin Vizcarra would be benefiting the mining company to pay the corresponding royalties in the year 2024. They point out that this is a "betrayal" due to the enormous needs that the district and the province have, especially when the health centres need equipment such as discard tests, oxygen tanks, mechanical respirators, among others…
