On March 11 and 12 2021, the South African police fired rubber bullets against unarmed environmental activists during a two-day peaceful protest against the Ikwezi coal mine, while community representatives were busy negotiating with the mine personnel. According to reports, one activists sustained serious injuries, and others sustained minor injuries. Eight activists were taken into custody, namely Sindi Kubheka, Robby Mokgalaka, Themba Khumalo, Isaac Shabalala, Zakhele Mthanti, Zanele Kubheka, Buhle Kunene and Sipho Shabalala. Another protester, Thoko Nkosi, was reportedly arrested by one of the mine’s security guards. Three of the arrested activists were later charged with public violence, while the others were released. Local groups condemned the arbitrariness of the arrests, and the increased police brutality against peaceful protesters.
