USA: Meta faces trial in New Mexico over allegations of Cambridge Analytica privacy violations and amplification of harmful content
The trial in a case brought by the state of New Mexico against Meta over the company’s alleged mishandling of the personal data of 350,000 New Mexicans begins on 8 September. According to the lawsuit, the data was handed off to political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica and used to target voters and influence the 2016 US elections. The lawsuit also accuses Facebook of deliberately amplifying harmful content rooted in misinformation and pushing it to users, including users who participated in the 6 January 2021 Capitol riot. The trial is set to run until 2 October and follows the state’s victory in a separate case against Meta over harms to children and the design of its platforms.
