[Unofficial description by Business and Human Rights Centre]
According to the Kaiten Sushi Union, the major conveyor-belt sushi chain Hama Sushi received a corrective recommendation from the Gyoda Labour Standards Inspection Office after it was found to have partially rounded down the recorded working hours of a male university student working part-time in Saitama Prefecture, resulting in unpaid wages.
In response to media enquiries, Hama Sushi stated that it “takes this corrective recommendation seriously and will strive to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.” While noting that the total amount and number of affected workers are still being calculated, the company said it would pay all outstanding wages to part-time and temporary workers.
According to the union, although the system of recording working hours in 15-minute increments was abolished in December last year, the company has refused to pay unpaid wages accrued prior to that change.
