Response to Article in “This Day” dated 19 January 2022
- The allegations contained in the article This Day article dated 19 January 2022 are entirely false. To be clear none of the damages obtained on behalf of the Bodo community has been “unaccounted for”. All damages were properly distributed in 2015 and 2016 accordance witt instructions which were properly given to us by the authorised claimants save for £50,000 which Leigh Day was asked to retain to cover the Community’s ongoing costs related to clean-up, including the cost of instructing independent experts.
- The claim concerns a case brought on behalf of the Bodo Community and individuals from neighbouring communities against Shell for compensation and clean up following two devastating spills in 2008 and 2009. Leigh Day were instructed by the Community leadership and 15,461 individual claimants to pursue compensation and clean up in the London High Court. The compensation claims were settled in 2015 for £55 million following a four-yearlegal battle.
- The claim for clean-up remains live in the London High Court and Leigh Day continues to represent the community with respect to the clean-up process and enjoys the full confidence of all the governance bodies of the Bodo community....
