On 5 September 2017, Jan Kuciak, an investigative journalist of the news website Aktuality.sk, received threats from businessman Marián Kočner during a phone interview. Instead of answering questions about his business, Mr. Kočner started to threaten and insult the journalist. Following the interview, Kuciak submitted a criminal complaint against Kočner, who was also mentioned in the so-called mafia lists, for intimidation. However, the police dismissed it, without inviting the businessman for a hearing. In February 2018, Jan Kuciak was murdered. In March 2019, police charged Mr. Kočner with ordering the murder of Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová.
