Workers of the World Unite for a New Social Contract with No Exclusions

Fri 1 May 2020, 11am Eastern time (US and Canada)

The COVID crisis exposes systemic injustices that the global labor movement has long fought to change — informality in our economy, weak health care systems, lack of a social safety net, structural racism, gender discrimination and inhumane and exploitative migration regimes. This discussion will highlight issues that workers around the world are facing right now, with particular attention to migrant workers. Our speakers will provide examples of the work that unions are doing to ensure that all workers, regardless of status, have protections amid the pandemic, and we strategize about how to use the crisis as a catalyst to push for a new social contract with no exclusions.

Moderator:
Cathy Feingold, International Director AFL-CIO, Deputy President ITUC

Speakers:
Chidi King, Director of Equality Department, International Trade Union Confederation
Genevieve Gencianos, Migration Program Coordinator, Public Services International
Hind Cherrouk, Middle East North Africa Regional Director, Solidarity Center
Nazma Akter, President, Sommilito Garment Sramik Federation, Bangladesh

International Workers’ Day: Farmworkers Demand Justice in Honduras

Fri 1 May 2020, 1pm Eastern time (US and Canada)

On May Day – International Workers’ Day – hear from farmworkers and trade unionists in Honduras who are fighting for justice on the farms of multinational corporation Fyffes, the number one supplier of melons to the U.S. market. Melon pickers are “essential workers” during the COVID-19 pandemic and yet the billion-dollar Fyffes corporation refuses to give them face masks and gloves, and has not implemented any social distancing on overcrowded company buses.

The webinar, hosted by the International Labor Rights Forum, will also highlight the long-term, ongoing human and labor rights violations on these plantations as revealed in the new report, Fyffes Farms Exposed: The Fight for Justice in the Honduran Melon Fields (laborrights.org/fyffeshondurasreport), by ILRF, Fair World Project, and the International Union of Food Workers (IUF) Latin America Regional Secretariat, with support from 3F International.
