On 29 January 2019, Rosane Santiago Silveira, an environmental and human rights defender, was tortured and murdered. She was actively working to stop land-grabbing by eucalyptus. According to Rosane's son, she received 3 death threats last year. Rosane was found dead in her house with clear signs of torture. Her hands and feet were tied and wounded and stab wounds and gunshots on her head.
