6 members of the Mayagna indigenous community from the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve in Nicaragua were killed by armed men on 30th January 2020. Another 10 members were kidnapped. Supposedly the armed men are linked to the tensions that have been rising in recent years between Nicaragua's indigenous communities and newcomers who have been moving into the region in search of fertile land, timber and gold. There have been reports of armed groups seizing indigenous land. The Inter-American Human Rights Commission has ordered that the case be fully investigated.
