Anglo raises bar on safety with promotion ban [So. Africa]

Anglo American has raised the stakes in its crusade to achieve zero deaths at its mines, warning managers that they would forfeit promotion opportunities if they failed to improve the company's safety record. Group chairman Mark Moody-Stuart told the annual general meeting (AGM) yesterday that managers were "aware that they will not progress…if they have a poor safety record..." Chief executive Cynthia Carroll said last year was a "turning point in our approach to safety. It had become clear that a gradual approach was not delivering the dramatic lowering of injury, and particularly fatality, rates that we were seeking. A step change was needed."
