Banking on the Environment

Bregje Hamelink is environmental coordinator for the Dutch Development Bank, (known as the Development Finance Company or FMO). For over 25 years it has been lending money to financial institutions in developing countries to help them fund worthwhile projects that might not get commercial loans. Nowadays, the FMO is urging its partners-in-finance to look at the impact of their investments. With this in mind they've been running an environmental management course aimed specifically at top managers with financial institutions in developing countries. They're being urged to think ‘environment' when financing their small development projects.
