“Chinese investments in Bolivia: report denounces environmental damage in indigenous territory” – 12th December 2018

The problems correspond with the fossil fuel exploration project in Nueva Esperanza, executed by the Chinese company BGP Bolivia in the territory of the Tacana population.  Non-compliance with commitments, damages to resources such as the chestnut trees and risks for uncontacted indigenous populations are denounced in the report presented before the United Nations.  In April 2015, the State company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) concreted the allocation of three seismic exploration projects in search of fossil fuels in the Bolivian Amazon for a value of 100 million dollars.  One of them is the project Nueva Esperanza, that the Chinese company BGP Bolivia, subsidiary of the State company China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), executed in the basin of the Madre de Dios River, inside the Tacana indigenous territory, with an investment of 57 million dollars.  The Tacana indigenous population approved this project on a series of conditions that assured minor impact on their forests and biodiversity, as well as the protection of indigenous populations in voluntary isolation that live in this territory.  However, during the implementation of the project, various reports of incompliance of these commitments surfaced, as well as environmental damage and judicial persecution against indigenous people, according to revelations of the report “Impacts of Chinese companies on human rights and the environment in Latin America”, elaborated by the International Human Rights Federation.
