Open letter to President Thein Sein: Postpone destructive Chinese pipelines in Burma

130 organizations in over 20 countries today held demonstrations and submitted the following open letter calling on Burma’s President Thein Sein to postpone China’s trans-Burma oil and gas pipelines project. The letter expressed serious concerns over human rights abuses as well as social, economic and environmental impacts of the Burmese, Chinese, Korean, and Indian company- led project. The Shwe Gas Project and trans-Burma oil and gas pipelines are currently under construction, originating off Burma’s western coast and terminating in China’s Yunnan Province, and set to come online in 2013. The project will become the country’s largest source of foreign revenue generating US $29 billion over 30 years...

Global Day of Action Against the Shwe and China-Burma Pipelines Project

The Shwe Gas Movement and supporters around the world will be launching the 7th Global Day of Action Against the Shwe Gas and China-Burma Pipelines Project on 1st March 2012. Participating cities include Chiang Mai, London, Ottawa, Seoul, Stockholm, Washington and others. Global Day of Action Demands: Stop abuses, harassment and intimidation of local community members including those who are actively campaigning against the SGP; An equitable benefits sharing system; An environmental law that requires Environmental and Social Impact Assessments to mitigate the kinds of environmental damage SGP has caused; Transparency in SGP revenue...; The Shwe Gas Project should be SUSPENDED until the above conditions are met...[includes links to "Shwe Gas Movement fact sheet; sample letter to President Thein Sein, others]

Shwe Gas Movement, a Burmese organization in exile, is launching a Global Day of Action against the Trans-Burma oil and gas pipeline project in Burma, which has continued despite the project going through an area of active conflict, lack of, or incomplete land compensation, and other abuses. We are encouraging participating organization to do peaceful protests in their home countries, launch divestment campaign activities from the companies involved, and endorse our Open Letter to the president of Burma, Thein Sein. We know you may be unable to organize any activity but we would appreciate your endorsement of the letter (attached) asking for the suspension of the project until community rights are protected and a sustainable framework for development established...

Shwe Gas Movement report: "Sold Out: Launch of China pipeline project unleashes abuse across Burma" - includes company responses, Shwe Gas Movement's rejoinder

On 5 September Shwe Gas Movement...issued the report: "Sold Out: Launch of China pipeline project unleashes abuse across Burma". The report alleges human rights abuses taking place in the construction of the Shwe gas pipeline, including displacement, forced labour, violence and deaths. The report also states that the pipeline is fueling conflict and will drain Burma of the natural gas resources it needs to develop. Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited the companies to respond...Hydro China did not respond. CNPC, GAIL, Myanmar Golden Crown, MOGE, ONGC Videsh, Petroleum Services Consultancy did not respond. Citic Group, Daewoo International, Hyundai Heavy Industries, KOGAS [part of POSCO] all responded. Contact information for Pyidawsi and Thandar Nga Ghar is not publicly available. Shwe Gas Movement issued a rejoinder available here. Daewoo responded with the following statement, "Daewoo's comprehensive report will be published in early December. Hopefully, the report will help your understanding of our project"...Daewoo's "comprehensive report" added Dec 2011...
