[T]he death of [a] female worker…in a Fujian textile factory...has sparked concern over the kind of conditions under which some workers labour in such hot weather...there is no complete regulation on...labour protection regarding working in high temperatures...It was only as recently as 2004 that the…Ministry of Health and Ministry of Labour and Social Security — included heatstroke as an “occupational disease”...“Temporary Measures Concerning Heatstroke Prevention”, which was promulgated by the Ministry...is only applicable to workers employed in industry, transportation and construction sectors, working outdoors in the hot summer, and farming. It is clear that this document is not particularly useful in contemporary China with its rapidly growing economy...some cities and provinces have released their own regulations over the past few years...

Hot weather leads to death in textile factory [China]

[T]he death of female worker Liu Yunfang on 3 July from heat stroke in a textile factory in Fujian has sparked concern over the kind of conditions under which some workers labour in such hot weather...The factory at which the woman died is referred to...as...Fujian Changlong Textile Factory...The crux of the problem in this case is threefold: whether the death can rightly be classified an industrial injury; the level of compensation due to Liu Yunfang’s family and complaints from some of the 1,000 workers employed there that the workplace is very hot indeed and heat stroke is not uncommon...It seems entirely possible that customers (retailers) and consumers in the US and Europe are wearing clothes made using yarn produced by a company in which a woman has died of heat stroke and others work in conditions that are not fit for human labour...I contacted the Fujian Changlong Textile Co. Ltd. for their comment on this story on Saturday 8 July via the website comment box, but they have as yet failed to respond.
