[In Shenzhen, China, we saw] the prevalence of very young workers, and the depths of their exploitation by large and small employers, whether mainland Chinese, Hong Kong, and Taiwanese companies, or foreign owners…[Death from exhaustion] is becoming widespread… the situation [of women workers] is generally worse…legal protections for workers are severely limited, and frequently undermined by official favoritism and corruption…the situation had begun to change, due to growing pressures on the government, the official labor organization, and the enterprises.
