Companies Told to Stop Mining at Marange [Zimbwabwe]

Zimbabwe has ordered Mbada Diamond Mining and Canadile Miners to stop mining at the Marange diamond fields, the state-run Sunday Mail reported. The companies, which were awarded contracts to mine the fields in November in partnership with the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC), are said to be lacking the mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA) report…The order comes one week after African Consolidated Resources (ACR) filed an urgent High Court application to force the Mbada and Canadile to cease mining on its claim to the Marange…A KP [Kimberley Process] review visit in June found that government-sponsored killings and human rights abuses had occurred in the Marange in the past year.
