Defence contractor gets exemption from discrimination laws

One of Australia's largest Defence contractors has been granted an exemption from racial discrimination laws in order to comply with tight United States security requirements. BAE Systems Australia…applied for an exemption from anti-discrimination laws so it can prevent some of its staff from working on lucrative US contracts…The Equal Opportunity Commissioner fought the application, arguing that business interests should not override human rights…BAE must ensure staff do not suffer loss from their exclusion and it can only inform particular managers of a worker's exclusion from a project…The Equal Opportunity Commissioner says she accepts the tribunal finding.
