DEP fines firm $60G for river spill [New Jersey, USA]

A Totowa asphalt company has been fined $60,000 by the [New Jersey] state Department of Environmental Protection for spilling undetermined gallons of diesel fuel into the Passaic River...DEP officials also charged that Tilcon New York Inc. of West Nyack, N.Y...failed to notify the state agency of the spill and take immediate plans to remediate the situation...Tilcon spokeswoman Joyce Watson could not be reached for comment Friday...Area residents said they were relieved that Tilcon was penalized, but thought the fine against the asphalt company should have been stiffer.
