[Doc] Media Statement for Immediate Release [Malawi]

Cempa wishes to express great shock and dismay at media reports published on 19th February, 2014 confirming that a motor vehicle contracted to carry some uranium from Kayelekera Uranium Mine in Karonga fell on its side and spilled some uranium thereby potentially exposing the public to some serious health and safety risks. The incident raises some very serious questions about the health and safety of all those exposed to and living in areas where this dangerous product passes through on its way to the market. Cempa is strongly urging all the concerned offices including but not limited to the Department of Mining and the Department of Environmental Affairs as well as the Ministry of Energy and Mining and the Ministry of Health and all regulatory and enforcement agencies to urgently investigate the matter and give independent assurances about the safety, health and well being of all those affected, directly or indirectly, by the spillage.
