Environmentalists warn investors over Mekong dam plans

Environmentalists have warned investors against going ahead with proposed dams on the Mekong River...A plan to...build a dam in Xayaburi province in Laos could displace communities and destroy fish populations, Suphasuk Pradubsuk from the World Wide Fund for Nature said in a statement issued Thursday...'If built, Laos' Xayaburi dam will greatly affect Vietnam's agricultural production and aquaculture,' the Tuoi Tre newspaper quoted Nguyen Thai Lai, Vietnam's deputy minister of natural resources and environment, as saying. An environmental assessment commissioned by the Mekong River Commission recommends a 10-year deferral of all dams on the main body of the Mekong...The Xayaburi project is to be built by Thai developer CH Karnchang Pcl with support from several Thai banks including Bangkok Bank Pcl, Kasikornbank Pcl, Krung Thai Bank Pcl and Siam Commercial Bank Pcl.
