Human Rights Impact Assessments in due diligence

Incorporating human rights into impact assessment procedures is a key opportunity in the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. In a first phase of work undertaken by IPIECA’s Human Rights Task Force, opportunities were identified to strengthen social impact assessments with regard to human rights. IPIECA with the Danish Institute for Human Rights are now following up with research to address three questions identified in a collaborative workshop: How to set the scope and depth of human rights in ESHIA? How can human rights impacts be measured and prioritised? How to categorise stakeholders according to human rights impact; what are the special considerations for vulnerable groups?
