India: Airlines ban comedian for questioning a journalist on film during a flight; comedian says his freedom of speech is being restricted

On 28 January 2020, Kunal Kamra, an Indian comedian, recorded a video of him questioning Arnab Goswami, an Indian journalist, while on an IndiGo flight. Kamra can be seen asking questions about whether Goswami was a 'coward or journalist or nationalist'. He dedicated this action to Rohit Vemula, a Dalit PhD scholar at the University of Hyderabad, who killed himself in his hostel room in 2016, due to caste-based discrimination. Kamra also questioned why Goswami was discussing Vemula's mother's caste on his TV show and why he is not speaking for national interest.

IndiGo airlines issued a six month travel ban against Kamra and tweeted saying that the comedians actions were unacceptable and could potentially compromise the safety of other passengers. Shortly after, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation advised other local airlines to follow IndiGo's actions and impose such restrictions on the comedian. In a response tweet, Kamra has questioned the legitimacy of the ban and said that his freedom of speech, a fundamental right according to Article 19 of the constitution, has been restricted by this action. He has sued the airline for 25 Lakh Rupees stating mental harrassment.
