Indonesians protest US-led destruction of protected forests

The last 10 days has seen a whirlwind of protests from provincial governments, Indigenous Peoples, environmentalists and academics opposed to a push by multi-national mining industry giants and Indonesian cabinet to rollback laws that currently protect forests from some of the most destructive mining practices...Companies set to benefit from the undermining of environmental standards include Colorado-based Newmont, the world’s largest gold producer, and New Orleans-based Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc.
