On 22 March 2023, World Water Day, a peaceful protest was held in solidarity with the community of Sitilpech, members of which have been detained, others physically attacked, and their camp forcefully removed for their resistance against the negative environmental impacts of pig farm owned by the company Kekén. After the march ended, four human rights defenders, Muñeca Aguilar, Andreu N, Alexis Sebastián and Andrea Sofía were detained by Special Investigation Police and handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The Public Prosecutor’s Office argued that Sofía and Sebastián were fighting, and when the police arrived, and Aguilar and Andreu N were carrying aerosol cans and intended to set fire to buildings and incite violence. No evidence was found against them, and the activists were released without charge.
