ARM denies Kilifi pollution claims [Kenya]

ARM Cement has denied claims of environmental pollution in Kilifi, saying its operations meet international practices and manufacturing standards of cement production. The CEO Pradeep Paunrana assured the residents living within the cement maker’s proximity that they are not exposed to pollutants. “Operations are pollution-free within and without the factory and we challenge anybody of contrary opinion to prove us wrong on this,” he said, adding that ARM has a full-fledged environmental office to maintain required standards. He dismissed recent reports alleging that the Kilifi County factory was polluting the air, saying the firm has dust arresters and other gadgets to ensure the plant is environmental-friendly...[A medical] report seen by the Nation indicates that 17 out of 21 residents picked randomly within the Kaloleni plant’s vicinity had cases of respiratory diseases or eye diseases symptoms attributable to dust.
