Bangladesh: Garment worker lynched by mob after factory fails to protect employee from violence

A 27-year-old garment worker was brutally lynched by a mob in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district after unverified allegations of “hurting religious sentiments,” exposing grave failures by factory management and authorities to protect a worker from foreseeable violence. The victim, Dipu Chandra Das, was employed at Pioneer Knitwears in Bhaluka. On 19 December, police said a group of workers assaulted him inside the factory following rumours that he had made derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Rather than ensuring his safety, he was forcibly taken out of the premises, where local residents joined the attack. He was beaten to death, his body partially burned, and later recovered by police. Authorities have confirmed that no audio, video, or digital evidence has been found to support the allegations. The Rapid Action Battalion later stated that the killing appeared to have been driven entirely by rumours. Police officials said factory authorities delayed informing law enforcement, noting that a timely alert could have prevented the killing. Officers described being obstructed by large crowds and severe traffic congestion upon arrival. Factory management has denied negligence, claiming efforts were made to manage the situation internally. The killing has intensified scrutiny of Bangladesh’s handling of mob violence and the role of employers in protecting workers.
