NYPD circumvented its internal ban on using Clearview AI by enlisting an FDNY fire marshal to run a facial recognition search that ultimately identified a pro-Palestinian protester, Zuhdi Ahmed, using photos from his high school years. This workaround violated New York City law, NYPD policy and raised serious concerns about inter-agency surveillance practices, lack of transparency, and potential infringements on First Amendment rights.
