Colombia: UN Rapporteurship on Human Rights Defenders expresses concern over risk posed by AngloGold Ashanti to Robinson Mejía

"Colombia: Alleged stigmatizing statements against human rights defender Mr. Robinson Arley Mejia Alonso (joint communication)" - March 9, 2022.

...The following is based on four communications written by the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders and other UN experts. The communications were sent to the Government of Colombia and the Government of South Africa, as well as to AngloGold Ashanti South Africa and its subsidiary AngloGold Ashanti Colombia, on November 16, 2021. They were made public late last year. The communications remained confidential for 60 days, during which time the governments and companies were expected to respond. The Government of Colombia responded on January 13, 2022, and both companies on January 12, 2022. These responses can be accessed at the end of this article and in the UN database... In the communications, we expressed our deep concern for the safety of human rights defenders in the department of Tolima and in particular of Mr. Mejia Alonso, who we are concerned was at heightened risk due to comments allegedly published by AngloGold Ashanti Colombia and its alleged employees. The authorities should re-evaluate the effectiveness of the measures provided to protect them and ensure that they address and mitigate the risks they face...
