Activist David Díaz Valdez was shot dead after getting out of his vehicle in the Salahua delegation, municipality of Manzanillo. Díaz Valdez had for years denounced the pollution from the General Manuel Álvarez Moreno thermoelectric plant, which has affected the population of the community of Campos since the 1990s. On 21 June, Díaz Valdez was released from prison after being charged with dispossession and damage to property belonging to others. The activist was incarcerated for nine months and was released by a judge when the crimes he was charged with were not proven. According to reports from the Manzanillo police, Díaz Valdez, founder of Morena in that municipality, was riddled with bullets on Friday afternoon by two people who arrived in a motorbike to his vehicle in Salahua. After entering prison, Díaz Valdés released a message in which he blamed the PRI governor, José Ignacio Peralta, for his security inside the prison, as well as the state attorney general, Gabriel Verduzco Rodríguez, and the Manzanillo magistrate, Sergio Marcelino Bravo Sandoval.
