Dominga Ramos was a human rights defender who assisted in the organisation of communities against the privatisation of energy by company ENERGUATE. She was a member of the Farmer Development Committee (Comité de Desarrollo Campesino), CODECA, an organisation that defends the rights of farmers against the imposition of economic projects such as palm oil, mining and hydroelectric dams. CODECA is made up of 3681 communities and over 10,000 members from 22 regions of the country. The movement has been the victim of threats and attacks in different parts of the country, and since 2014 has been particularly targeted due to their position in favour of energy nationalisation and against the privatisation of electricity in different parts of the country. On 5th March 2020, Dominga was shot dead in front of her house in the municipality of Santo Domingo, Suchitepéquez.
