Elita Yopla Herrera is a land and environmental defender and member of the Peasant Patrols of Cajamarca.

Since 2014, Elita Yopla and her husband, defender César Estrada Chuquilín, have reported being followed, receiving death threats and attacks on their physical and psychological integrity for denouncing and opposing the possible environmental damage caused by the Conga Mining Project of the Yanacocha, S.R.L. company.

On 23 May 2024, she observed two unidentified men speeding towards a motorbike just ten metres from the house. One of the ronderos accompanying the defender reportedly tried to question the men, but they quickly got on the vehicle and escaped, firing a shot in the air.
