Jesús Manuel García Martínez, an environmental defender from the state of Oaxaca, was murdered in the neighbourhood of Santa Cruz Tagolaba, municipality of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec. An armed group attacked the activist's home and also injured Érick Sánchez Gutiérrez, regional leader of the social organisation Corriente del Pueblo Sol Rojo (Red Sun People's Movement), to which Jesús Manuel also belonged. According to members of this organisation, both Érick Sánchez and Jesús Manuel had been resisting the federal project of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus, which aims to link the municipalities of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca and Coatzacoalcos in Veracruz.
