Forum in San Ignacio: Mining does not generate development [Peru]

...a forum about “mining and its impacts on the environment” was organized in San Ignacio. The conclusion was clear: mining does not generate development...Juan Aste, member of the Red Muqui...[said]...that mining does not generate development and even less sustainable development...mining generates few jobs...the jobs created are not long term jobs and stimulate social inequality...mining does not take into account the environmental cost: it does not consider adequately its environmental impact, in degradation as well as contamination...Regarding the case of Minera Majaz [part of Monterrico Metals] and its Rio Blanco project, Juan Aste noted that the company wants to impose its project without taking into account the local realities....The risk of contamination and environmental degradation in the river springs could affect the highly agricultural zone...the Rio Blanco project would obstruct the sustainable development of the whole northern region of Peru...Quique Rodríguez, legal assessor of FDSFN, spoke about Minera Majaz’ violations of the Peruvian constitution and of international treaties. [also refers to Manhattan Minerals]
