Foxconn (part of Hon Hai) Shenzhen Longhua Technology Industrial Park employs over 100,000 workers, mostly migrants from all over the country. The electronics and technology manufacturer has only been hiring people aged between 17 and 21, reportedly because they can be more easily managed. According to one FoxConn employee, the factory once attracted up to 3,000 applicants per day. However, the number of new recruitments matched the number of people fired, as high as 7,000 in August 2005. Many were fired for using forged proof of age documents to meet FoxConn's stringent age requirements. Another worker disclosed that the factory was operated on two 12-hour shifts. He had been earning 580RMB per month.. Following reports that Foxconn was operating “sweatshops” the factory increased his salary to 710MB, and overtime pay was increased from 5RMB per hour to 7.5RMB. But FoxConn stopped paying an allowance for meals and accommodation, so there was no increase in the net amount paid. This contradicts FoxConn’s claim that it was improving wages.
