On 27 May, 2021, three environmental rights defenders and residents of Alasbuluh Village, Wongsorejo District, Banyuwangi (Indonesia) were sentenced to 3 months in prison by the Banyuwangi District Court after being reported for obstructing the mining operation of the mining company PT Rolas Nusantara Tambang (RNT), owned by PTPN XII and RNM. They were charged with article 162 of Law No. 3 of 2020 on the Amendments to Law No. 4 of 2009 on Mineral and Coal Mining. The three people, namely Ahmad Busi'in, H. Sugianto, and Abdullah, are Alasbuluh villagers who struggle to uphold the right to a safe and healthy environment. They, along with hundreds of residents, rejected this company's mining activities claiming it damaged their village’s natural environment.
