India: Migrant-sending state Telangana first to implement reintegration policy
"Telengana to follow Pakistan & Nepal, make policy for returning migrants,"
Telangana is set to become the first state in India to implement a policy for integrating returning migrants into society. The state's labour department, in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), International Organisation for Migration, and UN Women, plans to establish a resource centre to assist migrants in reintegrating and finding employment.
This initiative puts Telangana on par with countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, which have already implemented similar strategies in South Asia, a region known for its high number of migrant workers, especially those going to the Gulf countries...
Due to the lack of accurate data on migrant workers, a consolidated database will be created to understand their socio-economic profiles and formulate effective reintegration strategies. Additionally, the labour department has already established two resource centres at the mandal level to provide assistance to returning migrants in accessing necessary documents, government benefits, and training programs...
The policy aims to address the challenges faced by returning migrants, who often lack support systems and avenues for reporting grievances in their destination countries. It focuses on financial goals, education, work, family distress, health emergencies, personal financial management, access to justice, social protection, healthcare, and safety.
