KDDI's response

We have confirmed the receipt of your letter dated October 18th, 2021, regarding the Telecommunications Business in Myanmar. Since entering the business in 2014, we have been making efforts to contribute to the development of Myanmar economically and socially through joint business with MPT. We sincerely share your deep concern about the current situation in Myanmar and hope to see a swift and peaceful resolution.

As described in our statement dated September 29th, 2021, despite the adverse conditions, we believe that our actions are exerting positive effects from the perspective of providing technical and marketing support for the country’s communication service, which is an essential element of its people’s lives and economic activities, as well as of respecting human rights.

We have been analyzing and monitoring various risks in conflict-affected Myanmar, including risks of our employees’ safety and possible human rights issues through gathering information and engagements with our stakeholders, such as our employees, partners, NGOs, investors and other Myanmar experts. And also we have approached MPT and the applicable regulatory authority about lawful interception and mobile internet shutdown as mentioned in our statement. We will continue and strengthen these initiatives. Though not all the information can be disclosed due to the concern of safety of our local colleagues, their family members and other related people, ensuring security of our network operations and maintenance, and the confidentiality obligations under relevant laws and contracts, we will continue our efforts to clarify our position and explain about our initiatives to all stakeholders.

KDDI continues to pursue ways to respect international human rights norms, keeping in mind the safety of all concerned, such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, including dialogues with stakeholders, in accordance with the KDDI Group Human Rights Policy.
