KfW's response

... KfW protects and respects international human rights within its sphere of influence and employs appropriate procedures to exclude any involvement in human rights violations. KfW is also committed to actively support the implementation of international human rights. KfW contributes to the realization of human rights to varying degrees depending on the instruments it has in the respective business sectors. KfW also uses its influence to strengthen human rights awareness and set a good example through its own actions (see: KfW Group's Human Rights Policy Statement).

With regard to the mentioned Poco Leok geothermal energy project in Ruteng, Flores, Indonesia (hereinafter and formally referred to as Ulumbu project since it also includes other communities) we would like to provide the following information:

Representatives of the Poco Leok community within the project area submitted a formal complaint to KfW against the planned financing. KfW subsequently commissioned an independent expert review and communicated the results of the review to the Project Implementation Agent, the local government and the affected population. In the contracts with KfW, the Project Implementation Agent is obliged to carry out the necessary processes in accordance with international standards i.e. World Bank’s Environmental and Social Standards (see: KfW Development Bank Sustainability Guideline). In addition, KfW has recommended measures to improve the information and consent processes with the affected community within the project area. KfW has suspended financing for the planned infrastructure measures in the Ulumbu project since end of 2024...
