Liberia: Community accuses mining company of "lying", causing deteriorating social conditions; Aureus denies claims

'They lied to us: Kinjol accuses mining firm of failing terms', 19 Aug 2015: The people of Kinjol and…surrounding…mining [towns]…accuse…[Aureus] of not living up to the[ir] agreement… Memam Selma-Vah, a mother of three…said the company promised to build…new homes, [a] clinic and hand pumps but…“We don’t have toilet…drinking water…school…no hospital. We used to have water but since the company…built us this new camp, we have to travel fifteen minutes to get water...[t]he company did not give us a dime as relocation benefit. They lied to us…—they told us they will finish our houses…before mining starts but since then, nothing…”…Debar Allen, General Manager Aureus Gold Mining Company said… the growing number of people in the area has carried them back to the drawing board… “…[T]he community was planned…around three thousand inhabitants but that number has…grown…”…In response to claim[s] about the company using a chemical that is killing them and their animals, the company General Manager denied the claims…[saying] they take safety…serious[ly]...
