Mac “Laurel” Sutherlin, who works for Rainforest Action Network, was arrested in July 2021 along with Ginger Cassady, the organization’s executive director, after they participated in a lockdown that shut down Enbridge's Line 3 oil pipeline construction in Hubbard County, Minnesota, USA. Sutherlin, who is charged with felony theft for allegedly locking himself to construction equipment, claims the charge is disproportionate. Activists allege irregularities and undue delays in the trials, claiming that the criminalisation of Line 3 activists is politically motivated, and meant to intimidate and dissuade free speech and further protests.
