Macarena was an environmental activist and was opposed to the construction of hydroelectric plants by Holding RP Global Chile. The company allegedly threatened Macarena before she was found dead. Her death was ruled as a suicide but the autopsy documents have been questioned by independent doctors hired by Macarena's family. After doubts were raised since the body was found in August 2016, an exhumation was ordered by the Court and the forensic doctor Luis Ravanal indicated that hers was a violent death other than suicide. The activist was opposed to the lack of consultation with the communities, related to the work of the RP Global (through SAESA, the subcontractor) in the Mapuche indigenous territory.
