MIPC mining withdraws dredger in response to sustained protests from farmers against iron sand mining in Leyte

"Mining firm temporarily withdraws dredger opposed by Leyte townsfolk" 19 February 2026

TACLOBAN CITY — Amid strong opposition to the resumption of magnetite sand mining in the coastal town and in response to sustained protests from farmers and residents, the MacArthur Integrated Processing Corporation (MIPC) has decided to withdraw its massive cutter suction dredger from MacArthur, Leyte.

...Its presence raised concerns among locals that full-scale operations could soon threaten rice fields and irrigation systems.

“In light of local sensitivities, we have decided to withdraw the dredger and coordinate with authorities while reassessing our work plan,” MIPC said in a press statement released on Thursday.

The company also stressed its commitment to balancing mining activities with environmental protection and community welfare.

MIPC emphasized that the dredger was selected after extensive technical studies confirmed its efficiency and environmental soundness.

The company also posted a P56-million rehabilitation bond with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) to restore mined-out areas before returning them to landowners...

Jesus Cabias Jr., spokesperson for the protesting farmers, said the dredger remained at the site as of press time. “We will see their sincerity if the dredger is removed from here,” he said, adding that while the group does not oppose mining outright, they demand firm assurances that their farmlands and irrigation systems will be protected.

The protests, which began in January, prompted Mayor Ruden Babante to issue a public statement on February 15, urging the company to “voluntarily withdraw, remove and cease the deployment” of the dredger.
