Myanmar: Increase in Chinese-invested rare earth mines in Shan State risks environment and public health, warns rights group

The Shan Human Rights Foundation (SHRF) has raised alarm over [...] rare earth mining activities in Mongpauk [...] in the northern part of the United Wa State Army (UWSA)-controlled area near the Shan State–China border [...].

The statement highlights [...] extraction ponds found around Mongpauk [...]. SHRF also referenced a video posted online by local miners that clearly shows this technique being used.

“This method [...] is causing widespread environmental degradation, polluting both surface and groundwater sources, and threatening the health and livelihoods of nearby communities,” SHRF explained.

One of the most concerning sites is located just three kilometers south of Mongpauk [...]. SHRF warned that the contamination of this creek and adjacent groundwater could affect thousands of residents.

“It is evident that the UWSA and China have reached a deal allowing Chinese-backed companies to extract and export rare earth elements across the Chinese border, entirely bypassing the Military Council,” SHRF stated.

Environmentalists are also concerned that the mines [...] inflicting long-term ecological and health damage on Myanmar communities.
