Dozens of Indonesian indigenous people of Natumingka, Toba Regency, North Sumatra reportedly suffered injuries due to clashes with workers of PT Toba Pulp Lestari (TPL), an affiliate of pulp and paper giant Royal Golden Eagle, on 18 May 2021. The clash allegedly occurred because the company forcibly planted eucalyptus in the community’s customary areas. The company denies the accusation. Indigenous communities and the company have been embroiled in a dispute over the land since 1992, with 23 Indigenous communities claiming ancestral rights to some 20,754 hectares inside the concession granted to TPL.
